Harper Government boosts Aboriginal tourism in British Columbia

Cranbrook, BC – Today, Mark Strahl, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced that the Harper Government is assisting Aboriginal tourism companies in British Columbia capitalize on increased visitor demand for authentic Aboriginal cultural experiences. The Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia (AtBC) is currently working with 25 Aboriginal tourism businesses in the province of British Columbia to help them capitalize on the increased demand. The Government is contributing to the implementation of AtBC’s Cultural Tourism Action Plan over the next three years. Parliamentary Strahl made the announcement for $1.8 million to AtBC at the St Eugene Resort in Cranbrook, British Columbia. Over the next three years, this funding will be used to support market-ready tourism businesses and to expand the association’s Authentic Aboriginal certification program. Ben Sherman Elected Chairman of WINTA

Mr Ben Sherman has been elected Chairman of the World Indigenous Tourism Alliance (WINTA) Leadership Council. He is one of the founders of WINTA. His experience spans 20 years in the tourism industry. Sherman is a member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Nation, from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, USA. Sherman and his siblings were brought up on their original family land allotment on the reservation. He graduated high school at Oglala Community School, a government boarding school on the reservation. He holds a Masters degree in Business Management. Sherman has been a national leader in American Indian tourism development and has presided over numerous American Indian tourism development activities in the U.S. He is a founding member of the Native Tourism Alliance, Business Enterprises for Sustainable Travel, First Peoples Fund and the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association. Last month at the Sustainable Summits conference in Golden, Colorado, La Paz on Foot’s Director of Programs, Stephen Taranto, gave a presentation on the company’s sustainable development work with indigenous and originario communities in the Central Andes. Since its foundation in 2004, La Paz on Foot has worked carefully and diligently with many of Bolivia’s native cultural groups to develop and maintain transparent, fair and mutually beneficial business relationships with rural communities throughout Bolivia and beyond. SEE Turtles Teams Up with Nature’s Path Foods Inc. to Offer Free Costa Rica Sea Turtle Trips

SEE Turtles, a non-profit wildlife conservation travel operator, is teaming up with leading organic cereal company Nature’s Path to bring families to Costa Rica to volunteer with a sea turtle conservation project in 2015. Six winners (3 in Canada and 3 in the US) will have the opportunity to bring four people for an all-expenses paid trip to the beautiful Osa Peninsula to participate in a sea turtle research project in March 2015. Winners of the EnviroTrip will spend three days working with Costa Rican organization Latin American Sea Turtles to catch endangered green and hawksbill sea turtles in the Golfo Dulce, a beautiful gulf located alongside the Osa Peninsula. 2014 Nedbank Tour de Tuli, a Resounding Success

Botswana’s Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama cycled the first stage of the Nedbank Tour de Tuli, which took cyclists through some of Africa’s most remote and beautiful areas. The 2014 Nedbank Tour de Tuli has been lauded a resounding success, once again living up to its reputation as one of southern Africa’s premier mountain biking events. Organized by Children in the Wilderness (CITW), the 10th edition of the event saw 340 participants cycle across over 250 km of challenging and remote terrain in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa from August 1-6, 2014.  “While traversing national parks and manoeuvring through some technical sections, participants were rewarded with plentiful elephant sightings and spectacular scenery”, said Nicola Harris, Tour Director. The Tour started at Pont Drift border between South Africa and Botswana, followed by two days of exploring the Northern Tuli Game Reserve on ancient elephant trails.
