Tropic, the boutique destination management company operating across Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, has introduced a new lodge-to-lodge trekking route through the northern Andes, part of a growing shift among operators toward slower, community-based travel.
The route winds through the páramo landscapes and volcanic lakes of northern Ecuador, a region Tropic says receives comparatively little international visibility. Rather than building the itinerary around summiting iconic peaks, the company has designed it around short, moderate daily stages that leave time for travelers to stop, observe, and talk with the people they meet along the way.
Travelers stay in small properties rooted in the communities the trail passes through rather than in conventional hotels, a choice Tropic says shapes the experience as much as the walking itself. The company describes the format as suited to couples, families, and independent travelers who want physical activity balanced with cultural contact and a degree of comfort.
The launch reflects several years of work alongside rural highland communities, Tropic said, with the route intended to support local tourism development over the long term. Because it relies on walking and short local transfers within a contained area, the itinerary was built with a lower carbon footprint in mind, and travelers can offset remaining emissions through the company's existing carbon program.
The northern Andes route is the latest addition to a portfolio that already includes similar lodge-to-lodge journeys in the Peruvian Andes and Chilean Patagonia. Tropic said this paced, community-rooted style of travel is becoming a larger part of how it designs trips across the region.
Founded in 1994, Tropic was named DMC of the Year and Workplace of the Year at the LATA Excellence Awards 2026. Its offices are Carbon Neutral certified and the company holds certification from Preferred by Nature.
