Rainforest Expeditions, a pioneer in ecotourism and conservation in the Peruvian Amazon, has been recognized with the Silver Award at the Global Responsible Tourism Awards 2025 in the category Nature Positive Responsible Tourism Award for its innovative Wired Amazon program, which integrates science, technology, and tourism to conserve biodiversity.

The award was announced on November 3 in London during the official ceremony of the Global Responsible Tourism Awards, sponsored by Sabre. The event brings together regional winners from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America to celebrate the most inspiring initiatives in sustainability, inclusion, and regenerative tourism worldwide.

The award was received by Eduardo Nycander, founder of Rainforest Expeditions and the Tambopata Macaw Project, who stated:

“This recognition belongs to everyone who believed in our vision when it still seemed like a dream: the Ese’Eja Native Community of Infierno, researchers and the scientific community, government institutions, and the thousands of guests from all over the world who participated in Wired Amazon activities in Tambopata, Peru. They have shown that science and tourism can work together for a common goal — conserving the Peruvian Amazon for future generations.”

A Regenerative Tourism Model Born in Tambopata

From its base in Madre de Dios, in the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, Rainforest Expeditions has proven that tourism can be a true force for conservation.

Through the Wired Amazon Program, the company connects travelers, scientists, and local communities in participatory research projects on Amazonian wildlife. Wired Amazon has involved over 15,000 contributors worldwide through digital platforms such as Zooniverse, using artificial intelligence, drones, camera traps, and bioacoustics to monitor species and ecosystems.

In addition to generating valuable scientific knowledge, this initiative allows visitors to learn and actively participate in conservation science, while ecotourism revenues directly fund scientific research and environmental education in local communities and across the region.

The jury of the Global Responsible Tourism Awards 2025 highlighted that “Wired Amazon demonstrates how ecotourism can fund science, enrich visitor experiences, and create lasting benefits for conservation.”

“We hope that the model developed by Rainforest Expeditions will be replicated by other lodges, communities, and organizations across the Amazon, positioning Peru as a global leader in regenerative tourism,” said Rocío Guzmán, Marketing and Sales Manager of Rainforest Expeditions.
