Victoria, BC – A passion for adventure travel and ecotourism has landed Paul Beckman the with the job of heading up communications for Ocean River Sports, a paddling company based in Victoria, BC.
Taking the role of communications manager Beckman brings more than 15 years of experience working (and playing) in the adventure travel industry – including operating kayak tours for cruise lines and taking such high-profile positions as vice president for Mexico’s Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association and associate board member for Pronatura Noroeste (a regional chapter of the country’s oldest conservation organization).
Beckman has been an active member of the Adventure Travel Trade Association and the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association and has experience working with a number of bird conservation organizations and tour companies.
“Because our on-the-water adventure business has many arms, including a retail shop, boat rentals, kayak school, tour and expedition outfitter and more, finding the right person for the job was no easy feat,” said Brian Henry, founder and owner of Ocean River Sports. “It’s a pleasure to welcome Paul to our Ocean River family – a talented and passionate communicator who can, when the need arises, effortlessly trade his lifejacket for a tie.”
Beckman, born and raised in Mexico, has close ties to Vancouver Island having met his wife, Carolyn, while attending Malaspina University-College (now Vancouver Island University) in 1988.
Ocean River Sports has been a main fixture of Victoria’s Inner Harbour for the past 30 years, growing from a small, solo enterprise to a 6,500-square-foot business with 26 full- and part-time employees and a separate division, Ocean River Adventures, to oversee the lessons and tours division of the business. Currently offering more than 40 unique lessons and expeditions, the company is working on new local and distant offerings for the 2012 season, including a 2012 kayak tour of the Hebrides, located on the west coast of Scotland.
