First ATTA AdventureWeek of 2015 to Showcase Baja California Sur, Mexico

shutterstock_107938613SEATTLE, WA (December 9, 2014) – The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA; www.adventuretravel.biz) has partnered with Visit Baja California Sur to create and offer AdventureWeek Baja Sur, a nine-day familiarization (FAM) journey through the colonial streets and marine life-rich waterways of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. International outbound operators and travel advisors, as well as journalists and media specializing in adventure travel tour offerings and stories are invited to participate from March 7 – 15, 2015.

“Baja California Sur as a destination has been a member of the ATTA since 2012, and as a state has a large number of ATTA member operators and hotels that understand the importance of adventure travel and have joined the association searching for new ways to understand and better approach the market.

In recent years Baja California Sur became a world example in terms of ecotourism by regulating gray whale watching activities. Since the 1980s all levels of government and the private sector have been working closely with the communities surrounding the gray whale sanctuaries who have embraced the activity as part of their life. Whale watching and protection has become an important sustainable activity for many generations.

With three UNESCO world Heritage Sites Baja California Sur is a major player in the global adventure tourism sector and will remain looking for new alternatives and synergies to keep building this segment of the market that has taken such an important role in the tourism industry.”

The ATTA and Visit Baja California Sur have committed to raising the awareness of the adventure potential of the region, traditionally associated with luxury resorts. International outbound operators, specialized travel agents and international travel journalists will follow in the footsteps of Jesuit missionaries and Jacques Cousteau and see a side of Baja California few tourists experience.

This AdventureWeek will host up to 25 participants. A core component of the trip is a chance for buyers to meet with a group of local operators during two “Marketplace” sessions to foster an understanding of the market and begin partnership building.

“The AdventureWeek product is totally unique to the ATTA,” said Antonio Del Rosal, ATTA’s Executive Director for Latin America. “Our hand-picked operators in Baja Sur will have an unmatched opportunity to expose their product to a highly qualified group of international buyers and media. We know participants will leave inspired by Baja Sur’s adventure potential and we are excited to see this result in innovative stories and itineraries.”

DSC_0847The nine-day itinerary will feature a mix of activities related to history, nature and adventure. Participants will visit Loreto National Marine Park, monitor sea turtles at Puerto Chale, hike through the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, tour colonial towns and Jesuit missions, sea kayak through mangroves looking for birds, watch for grey and blue whales in their winter home waters and see the 7,000-year-old cave paintings at Sierra de San Francisco (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
