Small-group adventure tour operator, Exodus Adventure Travels, announces it is the first travel company globally to partner with iNaturalist, one of the world’s largest citizen science platforms to launch the newest phase of its Citizen Science program.

As part of this new collaboration, Exodus adventurers will have the opportunity to make an active contribution to biodiversity science by photographing and documenting their own wildlife sightings as part of their trip.

The photographs and records will then be included within iNaturalist’s own global biodiversity database. The database is accessible to researchers, scientists and environmental and wildlife conservationists worldwide and regularly used to support their understanding of ecosystems and enable them to identify how to better support the protection of species and their habitats.

Destinations where iNaturalist have limited existing biodiversity data will be prioritised through the new partnership, with iNaturalist trips departing from March 2026 – aligned with World Wildlife Day. By contributing their wildlife observations through iNaturalist, Exodus guests will help fill critical data gaps and support global conservation efforts. Some of the species adventurers may help document globally threatened plants and wildlife – from wild vanilla orchids, rare dragonflies and elusive mammals in Rwanda and Uganda, to delicate fungi and lesser-recorded insects in Costa Rica - all of which need more data to support their protection.

Kasia Morgan, Head of Sustainability, Exodus Adventure Travels said: “We are delighted to partner with iNaturalist, given the global reach and impact of their citizen science platform and are determined to help fill some of their global observation gaps with the support of our adventurers.

At Exodus, we have committed to take a nature positive approach to the way we create and run our adventures. This includes engaging our customers in the conservation and restoration of nature. This new partnership marks the next exciting step in this journey, enabling many more of our customers to contribute to conservation science on their Exodus trips.”

Scott Loarie, Executive Director, iNaturalist adds: “Through our new partnership with Exodus, we're excited to help more people notice and document nature - especially in places where more observations can make a real difference for science and conservation. We look forward to working with the Exodus team and their guests in the future to extend the support for conservation efforts worldwide.”

Exodus Adventure Travels has a number of trips available to book now to destinations where iNaturalist currently has limited recorded data and where guests can make a valuable contribution to both collating information and supporting conservation science.

For guests keen to contribute to the Citizen Science program using iNaturalist, the aquatic ecosystems across Africa are often less documented. This itinerary includes the opportunity to explore and document on a wide variety of species in a number of different habitats including several waterways across Botswana.
