A new Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) research series examines how adventure travel continues to evolve beyond its traditional niche in four major outbound regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. This research from ATTA, supported by EF Adventures and CBI, shows just how large the opportunity has become. Together, these travelers represent a global adventure-oriented outbound market valued at approximately $1.16 trillion, highlighting the growing influence of experience-driven travel worldwide.

The “Open to Adventure” mindset plays out across the globe, revealing both shared trends and important differences in traveler motivations, spending patterns, and preferred experiences. These travelers have many differences, but are all willing to incorporate active, cultural, or nature-based experiences into their trips even when adventure is not the primary motivation.

Four reports, one focusing on each region, will be released throughout March 2026. Reports (free to ATTA members) will be available on ATTA's research website, and four articles will be released on Adventure Travel News in the upcoming weeks.

A Global Audience Open to Adventure

Across all four regions studied, adventure travel is increasingly mainstream. Rather than a niche pursued only by highly active travelers, adventure experiences are now woven into a wide range of trips.

“At its core, adventure travel today is about exploration and connection,” said Heather Kelly, Director of Research and Knowledge at ATTA. “What we’re seeing across all four regions is a large audience of travelers who want meaningful engagement with places, cultures, and landscapes. Adventure is becoming less about a single activity and more about how people experience a destination.”

The research identifies four traveler segments that together make up the “Open to Adventure” audience:

  • Adventure Intensives, who seek physically active and immersive experiences
  • Nature Enthusiasts, motivated by outdoor landscapes and wildlife
  • Cultural Explorers, focused on heritage, cuisine, and local culture
  • Experience Samplers, travelers who combine elements of activity, culture, and relaxation

While the proportions vary by region, Cultural Explorers emerge as the largest segment globally, reflecting a strong interest in learning, discovery, and authentic local experiences.

Asia: The Largest Adventure Opportunity

ESTIMATED VALUE: $USD 424 billion

Among the four regions analyzed, Asia represents the largest adventure-oriented outbound market, with an estimated $424 billion in travel spending among travelers open to adventure. The region’s rapid growth in outbound travel, driven by expanding middle classes and improved connectivity, has created a powerful new engine for global tourism.

Asian travelers often combine cultural discovery with nature-based exploration, seeking experiences that feel both enriching and memorable. The research also highlights notable spending patterns across markets: for example, Indian travelers tend to take longer trips, while Chinese and Japanese travelers often spend more per night, creating diverse economic impacts for destinations.

Europe: A Mature Adventure Market

ESTIMATED VALUE: $USD 357 billion

Europe represents another major source of adventure-oriented travelers, with a large and well-established outbound tourism market worth an estimated $357 billion. European travelers often display strong environmental awareness and a high level of familiarity with adventure-style experiences such as hiking, cycling, and nature-based travel. As a result, sustainability considerations and outdoor recreation play a particularly prominent role in travel decision-making among European audiences.

For destinations, European travelers often seek a balance between cultural depth and outdoor exploration, frequently combining city experiences with nearby nature-based activities.

North America: Experience-Driven Travel

ESTIMATED VALUE: $USD 188 billion

In North America, adventure travel has become deeply embedded in how many travelers approach international trips, leading to an estimated value of $188 billion. Travelers from the United States and Canada show strong interest in experiences that combine physical activity with cultural discovery such as guided hiking, wildlife viewing, culinary exploration, and immersive local experiences.

North American travelers also tend to prioritize quality, comfort, and professional trip organization, making well-designed itineraries and trusted operators important factors in destination selection.

Latin America: A Fast-Growing Adventure Market

ESTIMATED VALUE: $USD 39 billion

Latin America’s outbound adventure market represents approximately $39 billion in spending among travelers open to adventure, with nearly half of the region’s international travelers falling into this category.

The research highlights strong interest in cultural immersion among Latin American travelers, with cultural exploration and adventure experiences ranking among the top travel motivations. Markets such as Mexico and Brazil, the region’s largest outbound travel sources, demonstrate a particularly strong desire for experiences that combine exploration with social and family-oriented travel.

Shared Trends Across Regions

Despite regional differences, the research reveals several powerful trends shaping adventure travel globally. Cultural engagement stands out as one of the strongest drivers of adventure travel across all four regions. Travelers consistently express interest in connecting with local communities, learning about traditions, and experiencing regional cuisine.

Nature-based experiences also play a central role. Activities such as hiking, wildlife encounters, and outdoor exploration are among the most widely shared adventure interests worldwide.

At the same time, travelers increasingly seek trips that balance discovery with comfort. Across markets, factors such as safety, quality accommodations, and well-organized experiences remain essential to trip planning.

Sustainability as an Emerging Expectation

Another shared theme across regions is the growing importance of responsible travel. Rather than being treated as a separate initiative, sustainability is increasingly becoming part of the overall travel experience.

While sustainability is rarely the primary reason travelers choose a destination, many express strong interest in practices that support local communities and protect natural environments. Common actions include choosing locally owned businesses, reducing waste, and traveling during less crowded seasons.

A New Era for Adventure Travel

Taken together, the findings illustrate how dramatically adventure travel has expanded. Once considered a niche segment, it now reflects a broader mindset shared by travelers around the world: a desire for trips that feel meaningful, immersive, and personally enriching. For destinations and tourism businesses, understanding the “Open to Adventure” traveler will be essential in the years ahead.

According to Gustavo Timo, ATTA’s President, “Adventure travel today is less about extremes and more about curiosity. Travelers want to engage with the world in deeper and diverse ways, companies and destinations that help facilitate those connections are the ones most likely to thrive.”

With more than a trillion dollars in global travel spending linked to adventure-oriented experiences, the opportunity for destinations that understand this evolving traveler has never been greater.
