The UnTours Foundation is proud to announce that Monique Greenwood from Akwaaba Bed and Breakfast Inns is the winner of the 2022 UnDreamed Of Award. The award was announced at an event co-hosted by the UnTours Foundation and B Tourism at the B Corporation Champions Retreat in Philadelphia on November 30, 2022.
The 2022 award focus identified an entrepreneur who uses tourism to create a positive impact for the local community as well as for travelers. “Monique and Akwaaba exemplify these goals perfectly,” said UnTours Foundation Co-CEO Jonathan Coleman. The award comes with a $5,000 cash prize.
Akwaaba, which means “welcome” in a native dialect of Ghana, was originally launched in Brooklyn and now has locations in the Poconos and West Philadelphia. As one of the few black-owned bed and breakfasts in the United States, Monique has been determined to make Akwaaba a comfortable environment for travelers from all backgrounds. As just one example of this intentional strategy, for every Time or Fortune magazine on an Akwaaba coffee table, there is an Ebony or Essence magazine as well.
Next up for Akwaaba is to open a tea shop in West Philadelphia, near the Akwaaba Philly location, and to expand her Poconos location to two additional nearby residences.
“We are proud to welcome Monique into our family as an UnDreamed Of Award family and look forward to supporting the ongoing growth of her Akwaaba Inns empire,” said Coleman.
