(SEATTLE) March 17, 2015The Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS), hosted by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA; www.adventuretravel.biz), is the premier gathering of the adventure travel industry. The Summit will be held in Puerto Varas, Chile, this year October 5 - 9 with the theme: “Viva la revolucion de la aventura!”

“It’s a bold statement for a bold sector,” says ATTA President Mr. Shannon Stowell. “As a sector of the tourism world that relies heavily on pristine environments, thriving species and strong cultures with local economies, we have the best platform as an industry to help revolutionize tourism: To move the needle from exploitative to restorative.”

Throughout the plenary sessions, passionate people including influential writers and entrepreneurs will share examples of acts of courage, challenges to the status quo, defense of values -- and ask how delegates will be part of the adventure revolution.

The ATTA is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Becker, the author of Overbooked: The Exploding Business of Travel and Tourism, will be a keynote speaker at ATWS in Chile. Drawing from the research that led to the writing of her book, she’ll address the opportunities that adventure tourism has to be a leader in what she considers to be this “new golden age of travel,” if the industry can avoid the pitfalls of increasing tourism to unprepared places.

Becker will then join Jamie Sweeting, President of Planeterra and Vice President for Social Enterprise & Sustainability at G Adventures, and ATTA President Shannon Stowell for a plenary panel discussion. These industry experts will be led by Travel Weekly’s Editor-in-Chief, Arnie Weissmann, who will pose difficult questions about the adventure revolution and its role in overall development of tourism.

The ATTA is also pleased to have confirmed co-founder of The North Face, Doug Tompkins, as a keynote speaker. Using his experience creating national parks in Chile, Tompkins’ keynote session at ATWS will address the realistic approach needed to introduce adventurous visitors into new territory with the fewest unintended consequences.

An important purpose of the ATWS is to bring delegates and writers/publishers together to help spread the word about the adventure tourism. The ATTA is also currently confirming the attendance of adventure media members from around the globe. These media are added to the Summit Media Roster weekly in the run-up to October.

Additional noteworthy speakers and concurrent session topics will be announced in April.
