Santa Fe, NM, August 9, 2006 - Outside magazine is giving one lucky reader the adventure of a lifetime: a free Everest Classic base-camp trip sponsored by REI Adventures. In a promotional contest announced today, Outside has randomly inserted among all newsstand copies of its September issue, on sale August 15, a single winning ticket offering a free trip to Everest Base Camp, Nepal.

Outside's riveting September issue is dedicated to people's fascination with the beauty and tragedy associated with Everest. This fascination has only grown since the dramatic events of ten years ago, which led to Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" article in Outside. That extraordinary account of the 1996 climbing season catapulted Everest to a level of popular awareness never before seen. Again this year, Everest brought drama, catastrophes, and controversy with the deadliest climbing season since the dramatic events of 1996.

"The September issue will be an electrifying event that will resonate with the many millions drawn irresistibly to the power and mystery of Everest," said Paul Rolnick, consumer marketing director for Outside. "A 'golden ticket' type contest of this scale has never been done before in our industry. It's an innovative means to generate excitement about the issue and to give our readers the chance for the experience of a lifetime."

"REI Adventures' Mount Everest trip is one of our most popular excursions, taking adventurers from forested valleys to the breathtaking icebound region of the world's highest mountains," said Cynthia Dunbar, REI Adventures manager. "This epic journey includes visits to brilliantly decorated temples and monasteries, glaciers, famous icefields, and a sunset summit with one of the best light shows on earth. It is truly an adventure of a lifetime."

Each Outside magazine sold on newsstands around the country will have a special contest number printed in the magazine. Readers just need to log on to www.outsideinfo.com to determine whether they are holding the winning number and ticket. The trip, organized by REI Adventures, includes a 19-day guided trip from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp, along with round-trip airfare and accommodations.
