Machu Picchu will remain open for tourists in April 2016 despite reports of closures for maintenance purposes of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain, according to adventure travel pioneer G Adventures.

Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu will be closed at various stages for the month of April 2016. However, these mountain trails are separate to Machu Picchu itself (and the Inca trail and Lares trek) and normal tourist access for the Machu Picchu Archaeological site will remain in place for the duration of the maintenance works.

The Andina news agency reported the head of the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, Fernando Astete saying, "In April 2016 we will do comprehensive maintenance, for that we have ordered the suspension of visitors to the mountain Huayna Picchu from April 1-15, and the mountain of Machu Picchu from April 16-30 of the same year.” Unfortunately, this had led to the false perception that Machu Picchu itself may close temporarily.

"There has been some misunderstanding that because of the maintenance works occurring on Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu that Machu Picchu itself would also be closed in April 2016. This is not the case and normal access to Machu Picchu will remain for travelers," says Steve Lima, US Marketing Manager, G Adventures. “We actually do NOT recommend climbing Huayna Picchu to our travelers for safety reasons.”
