Mark Beaumont, a renowned Scottish cyclist and filmmaker

Scottish cyclist and filmmaker Mark Beaumont joined Jim Mather MSP as a speaker for the 2010 ATWS Opening Night dinner last night, brought to delegates by VisitScotland.  A true adventurer, he broke the Guinness World Record for a round the world cycle in the fastest time two years ago. He completed a distance 18,296 miles in 197 days – by covering an average 200 miles every single day and allowing himself just one day of rest each fortnight!

Having seen the world, he has chosen to come home and settle down, close to where he grew up, in the east of the country in Fife.  He says, “We Scots are guilty of forgetting what immense beauty we have in our own landscape. Here we are in October and the weather is stunning.”

Mark was raised on a farm and home schooled until the age of 12 at which point he went to high school and – in his holiday time- cycled across Scotland from coast to coast.  The countryside surrounding his home was his playground. So now you know what to do if you want to bring your kids up to love adventure!
