Half of All Web Sales to Occur on Social Media by 2015
November 14, 2012
Half of all web sales – to the tune of $30 billion – will be taking place on social media sites within two years, according to a Vocus Infographic shared on Mashable and based on data from Gartner Research.
While there’s been a lot of talk about a lack of trackable ROI on social media investment by brands, these numbers show that almost 90 percent of small businesses find Facebook in particular to be valuable to their marketing – a number that makes sense when you see the data proving that fans of companies on Facebook are more likely to purchase products than non-fans.
Approximately one in five shoppers already prefers to make purchases via Facebook than the company’s main website.

My question … what industry was the survey done for? Marketing for an iPad (since Apple was mentioned) is soooo different than marketing for adventure travel.
I can see marketing a dongle or thingamajig through a Facebook page, something that folks look for and buy the same day. But would a person booking a two week tour half way around the world prefer to book through our Facebook page vs our main website?
Don’t get me wrong, social media marketing is important, I am just questioning some of the social media economic stats.
