Assistant Editor’s Note: The following statement from the United State’s White House press office was released on January 19th 2012. This morning, President Obama will sign an Executive Order and announce new initiatives to significantly increase travel and tourism in the United States. The travel and tourism industry projects that more than 1 million American jobs could be created over the next decade if the U.S. increased its share of the international travel market. The Prophet of the Coming Aging Boom

December 21, 2011

A recent article from the November 2011 issue of Forbes magazine profiles consultant and author Ken Dychtwald, founder of the Age Wave, who urges businesses to understand and proactively market to the tidal wave of aging American baby boomers – those born between 1946 and 1964, a number that reaches 78 million people and, according to Dychtwald, is responsible for 80 percent of the growth of the United States population. Dychtwald, whose has consulted on boomer products for clients such as Centrum, Johnson & Johnson and Anheuser-Busch, also sees massive financial opportunity for brands and businesses where others only see the downsides to an aging population, as this group creates a “vast market for a potential explosion of products and services, from new dating websites to longevity insurance to new kinds of food.”  The later years are becoming a time for reinvention, experimentation and consumption. In a poll he did for financial services firm SunAmerica this year,... Read More →

U.S. Lost Travel Jobs in 2010, Even with Increased Visitor Spending

December 13, 2011

Despite high inbound travel numbers (a record of 60 million) and increased tourism spending (+12 percent) in 2010, employment in the tourism industry declined for the third year in a row, according to an article by Danny King in Travel Weekly. The decline totals almost 1.1 million  from 2007 to 2010, and likely continued last year as travel companies look to recoup losses or boost productivity before adding new hires. The article is based on updated information from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration last month, which stated: Clearly, the economic downturn has taken a major toll on this industry. In fact, the three years of declines in 2008, 2009 and 2010 are more than double the number of jobs lost in the three years following 9/11. King reports that while travel employment data from 2011 is not yet available, the U.S. Travel Association has released information that numbers may be rebounding, although there’s no indication yet of when a full... Read More →

U.S. Travel Applauds Western Governors Association Support of Visa Reform

December 13, 2011

Support continues to build nationwide among policymakers to reform the U.S. visa system in order to welcome more international visitors, create millions of American jobs and add billions to the U.S. economy. The Western Governors Council, an organization representing the Governors of 19 states and three U.S.-Flag Pacific islands, adopted a resolution to improve visa approval procedures for international travelers visiting the United States. The resolution supports visa reform advocated by the U.S. Travel Association, including: Setting a visa processing standard of two weeks and using visa fees to hire enough State Department personnel to focus only on processing travel visas while maintaining the same strict security standards; Introducing videoconferencing to conduct visa interviews in key markets; Expanding the Visa Waiver Program to new countries; and Granting Chinese travelers visas that are valid for at least five years versus the current one-year visa. “During a time of high... Read More →
