Post-Boston Regional Meeting Networking
Ordinarily, the ATTA’s Regional Meetings are 2-3 hours. In the special case of the Boston Globe Travel Show, it is the first the time the ATTA has held a regional meeting within an adventure travel show, and we’re just 90 minutes to cover a lot of territory. Therefore, our regularly scheduled networking periods will occur later in the day at two optional sessions:

1) At 4:00PM, The Boston Globe Travel Show starts its Travel Industry Opening Reception right on the show floor, which opens at 3:30pm. This gives the travel industry folks, including those signed up, the opportunity to walk around and meet folks in a more casual atmosphere. Anyone registered can come. Full agenda here: www.bostonglobetravelshow.com/agenda.htm.

2) The second is an emerging series of “Adventure Drinks” – a new, loose series of informal, local networking events assembled by adventure travel industry professionals in markets across the U.S., this one hosted by DuVine Adventures. Here are the details:

Harpoon Brewery, Friday, February 19, 2010 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM – Join ATTA Member DuVine Adventures for a fun, DuVine Adventures Party Friday night out at Harpoon Brewery (map). Come and be part this unique opportunity to get private access to the Brewhouse Platform and sample some award winning Harpoon beer. Learn about the incredible award winning destinations DuVine has designed for 2010. Vancouver Regional Meeting Report

May 14, 2009

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The first in a series of “Meeting of the Minds” events gathered tour operators, destination marketing representatives, travel agents, and media from the broader Vancouver and Whistler areas. Hosted by the ATTA and held at the Canadian Tourism Commission offices, the event was attended by sixteen companies, where industry trends were discussed, marketing ideas shared and peer-to-peer networking was a highlight.

ATTA President, Shannon Stowell, presented current strengths and threats facing the industry along with Q1 2009 industry survey results. The round table presentation allowed for a lively discussion on topics such as the economy and how to adjust, Voluntourism trends, supplier/operator relationships, the small ship cruising industry, and whether adventure travelers will see a decline in the quality of services offered by tour companies and lodges worldwide due to the recession. In light of successful partnerships among ATTA members such as Tourism Yukon and Kelty, ExOfficio and Jordan Tourism Board, Teva and Belize and others, ‘Manufacturer FAM trips’ were brought to light as shared marketing opportunities that leverage the strengths of all the organizations.

Overall, expectations are high and excitement buzzes from our Canadian members, upcoming speakers, and the CTC for the Quebec-based Adventure Travel World Summit 2009.

Later this month, the ATTA will subsequently host another “Meeting of the Minds” regional meeting in Boulder (May 29). Learn more.

State of the Economy Discussion at ATTA Regional Meetings Reveals Moderate Concern

July 7, 2008

(Seattle) – July 2008 – In Berkeley, California, Seattle, Vancouver, Wash., Boston and New York City between May 30th and June 26th, ATTA hosted nearly 150 adventure travel industry professionals at its Regional Networking Events. With two Adventure Travel World Summits away from U.S. soil in 2008, ATTA stepped up its commiment to major markets throughout the U.S. On July 8th, the ATTA will host yet another regional networking event, this one in the Boulder/Denver market, and another in August during the Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City.

While the ATTA takes the opportunity to update adventure travel industry executives (comprising tourism boards, tour operators, agents, transportation sector, accommodations, media and others), the primary objectives of the meeting include creating a lively community of those who are active in influencing the industry and to discuss pressing industry issues.  At each of the ATTA’s second quarter meetings (earlier this year, the ATTA hosted meetings in San Francisco, New York and Seattle), the primary industry-issue discussion centered on the state of the economy and its impact, perceived and real, on the adventure travel sector.

Below are excerpts of the telling discussion from the June 26th New York City ATTA Regional Meeting, hosted by ATTA Major Sponsor Men’s Journal in the Wenner Media Board Room. In most regional meetings, many industry executives (primarily tour operators) note banner sales and revenue for 2008, with some cautionary notes for 2009 – mainly, that growth is expected, but most commonly, only single digit percentage growth forecasts. Others point out increasing airfares, surcharges and air carrier route changes and cancellations are causing concern. Hear more in the video…
