Speaking at a forum that is currently taking place in Cancun, Shannon Stowell, president of the Adventure Travel Trade Association, stressed that the sector is ‘on the front lines of climate change issues’.
The main reason for this is that adventure travel companies rely on local cultures, wildlife and natural environments for their income, meaning they have a strong interest in protecting the destinations in which they operate.
Mr Stowell’s comments were backed up by a speech from Mexican president Felipe Calderon.
‘Adventure travel is key to the preservation of habitat and culture,’ Mr Calderon said. ‘Mexico has to become the champion of adventure travel.’
